Week 3 / Day 2: ‘don’t be serious, it’s not helping’

17.6.2025

After yesterday’s session I was really excited about working with the AI. I’ve been listening to the Anthology of World Vocal Music, for over a decade, since my wonderful singing teacher Carlos Aransay gave it to me and nudged me in this direction. I’ve been dreaming of making this kind of sound experience ever since. Improvising with the AI model is supporting vocal chaos. Isn’t this how songs to unknown deities were created. Listening to the song of the Argentinian shaman, it sounds so much like the non-sense language of the AI voice model. It is guiding me, giving me a space where I can lose my self-consciousness of sounding ‘silly’.

Is it because we take ourselves too seriously, connecting rationalism to seriousness, so that modern culture can’t create any more rituals? To make a ritual you have to allow yourself to be silly again… like a child, playing, but seriously: like the poojari (priest) at the Trilokhardham Hanuman temple next to my house in Khajuraho who was singing the mantra Om namah Shivaya, as he dripped water out of a ‘toy’ nandi-bull?
